We love the idea of a First Lady in Lanvin. And we love that Shelley takes risks. But we don't love this dress on her. Like most women who don't wear clothes for a living, she finds it difficult to wear the edgier or off-the-beaten-paths looks. Not that Lanvin is cutting edge or anything, just that the draping and the unusual sleeve/shoulder/neckline treatment firmly place this frock outside the "effortless" category and add bulk to her shoulders in a less-than-flattering way. In addition, like a lot of women of color, solid black doesn't really set her off unless she's dressing it up with a print or some interesting jewelry. It doesn't look bad on her; just a little bleh. A for effort, though, because it's definitely an interesting dress.

We dig Hillary's (presumably) Chanel jacket but that's all we're saying about that. We've been asked why we don't look at Hillary's clothes (or Sarah Palin's or Nancy Pelosi's) on the blog and there's one simple reason: If the Secretary of State (or the former Governor of Alaska or the former Speaker of the House) was a man, no one would be discussing his clothes. It's not a position where the clothes should matter, even when the position is held by a woman. The First Lady is, on the surface at least, a very retro, old school, pre-feminist position that requires the holder to indulge in very stereotypically upper-class lady pastimes like hosting parties and events, giving speeches, and being a spokesperson for causes. As such, her clothes are fair game, especially when she's taking the kinds of risks Mrs. O regularly takes.
