Way back when, I asked my mother to buy me the first Beatles album, Meet the Beatles. I remember being home, sick in bed, home from school and she came home with the bag. I was so excited. I ripped it open (ripped meant something very different in 1964) and out I pulled : The Buggs: The Beetle Beat (note spelling)........my friends laughed at me... my mother is now dead.

So it is Christmas 2006. Some kid wants an iPod and his parents gives him a ZUNE. And it's a brown one.:D

By the way, am I the only person here who thinks Halo Combat Evolved was the best? Halo 3 comes in very close for me.
Halo: CE was great, and was one of my most memorable experiences in games. I'd never been into shooters before playing it, so I didn't go in with any preconceived notions or anything. It was a blast right from the get-go.I liked Halo 3, but not nearly as much as CE, or even ODST for that matter. The writing and story in Halo 3, while great sci-fi, are a bit silly, in my opinion. I liked ODST for the dark, gritty, get-out-alive feel it had. It had a great story, and was very well voice acted as well.

I'm just waiting for UPS to show up with my Legendary version and Reach console, then I will start playing. I'm hearing, from a large number of people who's opinions I respect, that Reach is just slightly below CE in the list of great Halo games. So, it is looking like Bungie went all out, and successfully so, with their last Halo game. I can't wait to dig in.

Private organisations cannot fine people. The RIAA has levied no fines against individuals. There have been lawsuits and settlements, but not fines. Also, the RIAA cannot bring criminal copyright infringement charges, only civil ones. As such, you can't say "you're criminals". Criminal copyright infringement is not something that is brought against the casual software downloader, it is something that is charged against individuals that are into piracy for profit.

And it's not theft, it's copyright infringement. Theft deprives the true owner of his possession, copyright infringement doesn't.

At least if we're going to argue, let's argue using the proper terms.

Especially when iPods first hit the scene, price was a big issue for a lot of customers. Apple products have always been on the pricey side. So perhaps the popularity of the larger capacity iPods was impacted by the pricing structure, which impacted Apple's perception of the demand.

Apple's non Mac consumer electronics are not boutique/luxury goods and haven't been for a long time. They're cheaper than competitor hardware with similar specs. Even Samsung CE, a member of Samsung Group which makes the most expensive components that go into Apple's consumer electronics, can't compete with Apple on price due to Apple's volume and pre-emptive supply chain lockup.

It's getting kindof absurd seeing that hard drives keep getting bigger and cheaper. Would an iPod Touch really be that much thicker if it had 128 GB? And just how thick would (dare I say it) a 500 GB iPod Touch be? For the way I would use the device, I wouldn't mind a little extra thickness and weight.

iPod Classics = HDD based storage. iPod Touches = solid state based storage.

You might not mind the extra thickness and weight of HDD based Touch but you'd definitely mind the slower speed. Flash based 500GB? You would definitely mind the price.

Without being too argumentative, the problem is people want a specific device and unlimited data. You can get unlimited data in a number of ways - just not necessarily with a specific device.

Actually, subscription makes sense when you consider:
a) You have the latest version at a known fixed cost
b) As a lease, rather than buy, it becomes tax deductible in full with no depreciation
c) If you only use some apps infrequently, it may be cheaper than a full suite

So it may make sense for some companies and or individuals.

You don't sound argumentative at all, and in fact you make sense. I never considered the device specific data plans that do and do not have caps.

The subscription model is nice for those reasons you mention, and I do see a lot of high end Adobe shops buying into it. It does make sense for them. The small time freelancer is going to be a tough call IMHO.

I have been looking to see how Adobe will handle the initial software distribution, e.g. do I have to plunk down $xxx.xx amount of money to get the software, then pay $35 a month or whatever for the license? Haven't found anything yet.

I know the following. Apple is turning a profit in a crappy market. Apple layoffs have been light. Apple is not a company with the recources (based on market cap) to fab its own chips. These are things which you can verify for yourself.

When we started this argument, I observed that executive teams at publicly traded companies prolly knew more than you about what was happening. A day later, with have a 64 Bit IBM chip, with many sources (sfgate.com, cnn.com, etc.) independently confirming it is to become an Apple part.

Hmmmm.....looks like it worked out to me.


Well it seems as though Apple has gone with IBM, so part of their "plan" is to improve chip speed, just as i suggested they should.


Without you, I'm sure they'd be gunning to slow things down. I'm sure you'll be back to tell us how this 1.8 GHz 64 bit Power4 derivative is slow compared to the 3.8 GHz PIV next year.
